stays on your record in california? i live in lax area. ive been to the dmv website but i cannot find the answer.

It's difficult to find sources for the answer. It's three years unless DUI is involved. Note that that's three years from some statutory date, not the date of the accident. That could involve a few or several months more, although when you had the accident your insurance would remain at the ordinary rate for some months.

Look at it another way, the good driver discount amounts to 20% discount, so when you lose it your rates go up 25% (do the math). It's good sense to not have accidents and to not get more than one ticket in three years. If you get a second ticket you need to go to driving school (you can do it online) to wipe the ticket from your record. You can get a driving school wipe only once per year.

Or you can pay through the nose...

I believe it's 7 years, I remember discussing that issue with someone at the DMV regarding my record.
