Not far off!

But in addition, it was the people of Louisville feeling both inferior and superior simultaneously in comparison to surrounding large cities--Nashville ("but it's in Tennessee,") Cincinnati ("yeah they have more than we do, but they have graffiti,") Lexington ("what a one horse town, but it sure is pretty,") and Indianapolis ("cost of living there is lower than here, but you only stop there on the way to Chicago.") That's more of what I meant.

Anyway, back to California stuff...

Most of the Midwest leaves much to be desired, especially compared to Southern California. I would strongly caution anyone moving from Southern California to the Midwest for the obvious reasons. FWIW, states like Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, Texas, and even North Carolina are much better alternatives to Southern California than Ohio.

No and here's why. As someone who was raised near the coast and currently lives on the coast, it would be completely alien to me to have to live in a land locked state like Ohio where you are hours from the closest ocean. I'm sure they are nice places to live with great people, but I simply would miss the ocean and the weather too much.

The Great Lakes are basically the same as the ocean, but with less salt.

And they freeze over.

And the water can be warmer.

And refineries dump chemicals in them.

And some locations aren't exactly healthy to swim in.

Other than that, I think they're great. Lake Michigan is beautiful during the summer!

No they are not. You have a whole ecosystem, all the biodiversity in the oceans that are worlds apart from a lake. The Great Lakes have nearly the same life forms as a small pond.
