So..i'm really new to the whole public transportation thing, but i REALLY want to use it. I've looked at both websites and am still a little confused. Is there a downloadable/printable map somewhere? I'm still not sure where are living but my husband will be working in the Hollywood area

Some of my points of interest are

Santee Alley
Santa Monica
Santa Barbra
Griffith Observatory
Flower Market
Grand Central market...

Any suggestions?

There are several transit agencies in the Los Angeles area. The biggest for those areas you are looking at are Metro, LADOT, and Big Blue Bus. Metrolink is long distance commuter rail, whereas "Metro" is the subway and light rail system, as well as Metro Buses. Don't confuse the two.

LADOT: LADOT Transit Services
Metro: Maps & Timetables
Big Blue Bus: Welcome to the Big Blue Bus
