I'm graduating from college on the east coast in May and just landed a job in Santa Fe Springs making 70-80k. I'm a California boy originally from Sacramento, so I'm excited to have a ticket back west. Anything northwest of LA will be too far from work, I'd like to live within a reasonably long walking distance to a good bar scene and a beach. Hopefully paying as close to 1000/mo as possible. Is that possible? Not sure what my budget should be, as this is the first time I'll be on salary. Where is the best place for me? Thanks

i wouldn't live in LA, too far (at least the interesting neighborhoods). i'd look at places like fullerton or brea, maybe even long beach.

The thought of a beach town is really appealing and is be willing to accept a 40-45 minute commute. I was surprised that when i visited for the interview that the hotel in El Segundo to Santa Fe Springs was only a 30-40min at 8am. So I guess its fair to put Hermosa Beach, Long Beach, and Bellmont Shore within range.

long beach would be about the same (but the 605 can get slow heading north in the am), but hermosa would definitely be over 45 minutes since there is no easy freeway access through that city and you'd have to use the 405. don't get me wrong, living by the beach is great, but it is expensive and overrated if you don't take advantage of it (surfing, swimming, running and biking on the boardwalk, etc.). the weather is also not ideal for much of the year. this summer, the sun barely came out at all and the temps only got above 70 a handful of times.

If I had to leave the beach, could you suggest which inland cities in range of work would offer the best activities and bar scene for a young grad like myself? I'm used to a good downtown area with people roaming the streets and would like to be in that kind of centralized environment where its easy to meet people.

Your budget is going to be a little low I think, budget at least $1200 for a 1 bedroom.

Manhattan/Hermosa Beach are on the more expensive side. You'd be near the 105 though, somewhat easier commute.
