Between 99 Cents and More, Food 4 Less, Ralphs and Trader Joe's, I accomplish all my grocery shopping. I used to be more partial to Gelson's until I gave my finances a rehab.

theres this store in Sunland called Sunland Produce with cheap cheap prices on everything fresh. it's owned by Armenians or Arabs I think, so there's tons of middle-eastern food as well.

I really don't see what Gelson's is all about,maybe it's a symbol of money?

I love Gelsons! They have a great selection of a big variety of gourmet foods and simple foods. And it isn't ALWAYS expensive. Yes, many items are way over priced but there are also many items that are comparable to the other stores. I only bought speciality items at Gelsons and some of their meats and oh yes...the fruits and veggies!! I also appreciated the way they treat their customers!! It is like the way we USE to be treated in most stores. Any and all problems or questions are taken care of. That's nice!! And it's CLEAN! When there was only one Gelsons it was where many wealthy people shopped. They even had valet parking. Then it was about money. Since Gelsons has opened more stores and so many everyday people shop there I don't think it's about money anymore..but I do think it is about quality and service.

We have a discount supermarket in our neighborhood. When we first moved in, we were thrilled to be able to get and out for under $20, but over time, I got depressed by the quality of produce and the general lack of cleanliness, so we no longer go. Like Cynwldkat, I'm happy to a premium for a nicer shopping experience. Gelson's may not be as fun as Whole Foods, but the lack of lines makes it a superior experience. Plus, they usually have discounts or specials that make it worthwhile - like the Hollywood Bowl tickets that come with their picnic sets.

Try Gelsons BBQ steaks. Most people don't know about these. They are very inexpensive and the best. They go fast though so ask when they will have them. I even had them hold me a couple if I had to wait for them. They cost like $5.00 each plus or minus a bit. Gelsons meat is terrific and this is just one cut from the rib-eye steak. It's their best kept secret!!!
