I just got Charter Cable (for internet) less than a week ago, and my internet connection is EXTREMELY spotty. Off and on... all day. This is a big problem for me since I work from home as a web designer and I need the internet for my job.

On Friday, I called to find out what was going on, and they could see on their end that the service was spotty. They told me they would send someone out yesterday. Yesterday, someone called and said they'd been having problems in the area and that it was being fixed so they weren't going to come out. I'm having the same problems today.

My question is... is this how it's going to be? For those of you who live in Burbank, do I need to just expect spotty service from now on? Or is this just a fluke for the past week?

Apparently Charter Cable is the only option for internet? Is there anything else I can do? Any other company I can use?

Thanks.

I'd stay away from Time Warner (see the TW thread).

I'm not very impressed with Charter. I only have their cable TV service and it can range from average to poor. I've avoided the temptation to get the internet/phone/cable bundle, based on their cable service.

I called Charter and, according to them, my modem is defective. I find this hard to believe as it's brand new. BUT, since it's brand new, I can return it and get another one without too much trouble. I'm hoping that's the problem.

Their customer support was decent, at least.

If you plan on being a customer for more than a year buy your own modem. I got a good deal on one online and I save the 5 bux per month they charge and I got the model for like 40 bux.

Can anyone recommend a good cable modem for Charter's internet service? I live in Pasadena, California. I don't want to rent the modem for $5/month when it will probably cost me less than $100 to buy the modem. I will only subscribe to Charter's internet service.

Thank you

I have Charter Cable Internet and Phone (I'm in Glendale). I just got it in October and was having issues with my connection almost from Day 1.

I thought it was the cable modem or something, but what I ended up doing was going into my Wireless Modem and changing the frequency of the wireless setting. This has seemed to relieve the issue, and my connection does not drop any more. I think there was interference from other wireless connections in the neighborhood.

Not sure if you are using a wireless modem, but something to consider.

Search for some motorola surfboards on a site like amazon. You can get a basic one for like $50.

Actually DON'T do that!

So weird that this thread was resurrected. I just did a post on Yelp for Charter. Not a flattering one.

I also had problems from day one with connectivity. After many many calls, I was finally told that they don't support the Motorola Surfboard modem I'd bought separately and THAT was the reason for the connectivity issues. The one that was too late to return. I'm pretty sure that was bull. The weirdest thing was after that (about 2 months, maybe, after I first got the service) things started working pretty well. And everything has been fine. I wish I had the list of "approved modems" but I can't find it. It's nowhere online either. They had to read them off to me over the phone, and there weren't that many at all. Basically they absolve themselves of all responsibility if you don't have an approved modem. Nice, huh?

THEN: Today I got my bill and they'd tacked on another $25 on top of my regular bill. Apparently the prices they advertise on their website are only good for 6 months. They don't tell you how much it will go up after 6 months. After I was told that my internet would now cost me $80/month, I told them to cancel my account.

I got transferred to an "account specialist" who told me she'd lower it to $60/month. I was sick of being on the phone so I said fine. Then she told me they would charge me $10 for the "change in service" even though I wasn't changing my service. Again, I didn't feel like dealing so I just said fine (something they probably count on).

I really really hate Charter, in case you couldn't tell. But they have the monopoly where I'm living.

What they told you was a crock of you know what. I've been running my surfboard 6120 for over a year with zero problems.
