Thanks to Charles for the color-coded map, which very interestingly confirmed a lot of the opinions posted here. First of all, the OP doesn't need to worry about standing out, as L.A. has plenty of overweight people, even if they are a smaller percentage than some other areas. I have a friend who lived and worked in L.A. for about 40 years and then retired to rural western Pennsylvania about 10 years ago. He came back to L.A. for a visit and said he really noticed the difference (more large people in Pennsyvania).

Back to that map. Even in the "skinniest" state did you pay attention to the percentage of obese people? Not just overweight, but obese? It is absolutely scary. No wonder we have a crisis in the affordability of health care. (I'm not saying that is the only cause of it.)

I feel that in places where it is usually extreme temps (really hot or really cold) people tend to be more overweight, due to the fact that you don't want to be outside, moving around, in either extreme.

I know that I went down to Virginia this past summer (in August) and the heat was just unbearable, and you feel sticky and sweaty just walking from the house to the car. Florida, same thing. NYC also had a really hot, sticky summer and I stayed inside more than normal.

In a place like California, where it is nice and pleasant out 99% of the time, you have people going outdoors more often, exercising, and just living a more healthy lifestyle. (IMO of course)

This is so stupid. Women shouldn't have to worry about their size like this and it ridiculous that there is a whole conversation about it on here. Wake up people! Why are we living this way? Move to LA no matter what you look like. You'll be great. Ignore the industry that makes you feel so self conscious.

Hmmmmm. Then why are the lower income brackets more likely to be obese? The wealthier, the thinner.

I'd say, if you are talking LA proper and middle to higher wage class, yes more fit/thin than elsewhere in So cal and the U.S. for that matter. It's very looks based here and that keeps people in the gym and watching what they eat. nutrition/healthy eating is also very L.A. (yes exceptions blah blah!)

People are thinner in LA but not stick model thin. I've noticed fat people are rarer than in the South.
