My girlfriend and I are considering relocating to L.A. next year. We're both new attorneys, but neither of us has a job or anything else keeping us here in Chicago. We both grew up here and we're looking for a change, even if it means taking the bar exam over again

We'll be going to L.A. next month to look at neighborhoods. For the first year, we need a place that's not a terribly long way from a potential law job. From what I gather, the majority of firms in L.A. proper are either downtown, in mid-wilshire, or on the westside. There are also a number of firms in Pasadena and Glendale (correct me if i'm wrong on this).

Right now, we're looking for a one, possibly two bedroom place for no more than $1500. We've seen some places in Echo Park/Silver Lake that seem reasonable, but I've heard good things about Culver City as well so I'm looking for a little feedback. I would like public transit as a possible option also, which of course depends on where I find a job.

I know L.A.'s got its problems, but I understand that since I'm from a big city. Right now, I think the prospect of a 73 degree day in December outweighs a lot of the negatives (we had a high of 19 today).

Thanks for your input.

You really need to narrow down your employment location before you can pick a neighborhood. There are law firms everywhere, but you're on track assuming the major firms are DTLA and Century City (west la). With that being said, there are major firms in Long Beach and Orange County, as well.

Culver City is nice. Some areas are nicer than others.

$1500 will get you a normal 1 bedroom. Slim pickings for a 2 bedroom in that range, in a decent area.

fyi, culver city to pasadena would be a miserable commute. come check out la and the neighborhoods, but you'll want to live no more than 10 miles from your office (at the very most) once you find a job.
