When I checked online after I got home, I figured out that the fare is $1.50.

They're fairly strict about making sure you pay the proper fare here in Portland, OR.. If you don't pay, or put a nickle in and march on, the driver will call transit police.
I ride the Metro buses regularly and have seen drivers on multiple occasions address non-payment of fare so you may have observed a particularly lax driver. Also, how do you know that some passengers were "chucking a nickle"? Some folks purchase bus tokens to use on the buses so how do you know those "nickels" were not tokens?

Even though this was several years ago, it's a bit down memory lane. I was around 16 years old and cashless. I was with my cousin who wanted me to enter the bus first so he could pay for both of us. I proceeded passed the bus driver and felt someone yank on my arm. I turned around and it was the bus driver with the snootiest look on his face, "You forgot to pay bud!"

"Um, my cousin's paying!"

This was in Encino. Not exactly a fun memory. I generally only take the subway nowadays, so I don't have any recent bus stories.

As long as you're honest and not trying to run game, most drivers are understanding.
And I don't want some dirty bum with no legal right to be on board(not paying the actual fare due) just riding around to warm up/cool down on the same bus I'm on. It provides direct connection from south central to Hollywood and when the driver let under payment/fare skipping slide, it makes it that much easier for pollution to come into tourist area.

And the above isn't helping. If the driver wants to let someone on board, he should pay for the fare out of his own pocket.

Could it be that you were asking the driver what the fair was and had no real intent to rip off the system, and the driver cut you some slack. Now you know the fair and will pay full price next time. I can bet that most drivers like most people will cut some slack to those that act or look somewhat respectable. Maybe you should try to look homeless or like a drug dealer and see what your reaction will be. I bet it will be differant and that you will pay full price. LOL

Most of passengers on that 212 were sketchy looking. One guy started pulled out like a bundle of 20s and started counting right on the bus and looked filthy as hell and perhaps high on meth

Where did you get on the 212? Where were you going?

I don't really notice the 212 being all that shady and I take it if I am ever doing the Hollywood/Highland to WeHo thing and don't feel like walking. I've even taken it to Wilshire and didn't see anyone all that sketchy. Granted I live in Hollywood and what I consider odd isn't what most do considering the fact I live in one of the weirdest, and most awesome, places in the world and see interesting characters every day.

I'm of the mindset that the fare on city buses should be just as much as public parking in most cities -- FREE!

LA doesn't allow transfers or re-boarding though. You get off to transfer to another bus, you pay $1.50 again when you get on the new bus.

Then you haven't even paddled into south central waters yet.
