Hey, everyone,

After a few weeks of apartment hunting, I'm going to be living in the Palms area, with a new job starting next week in Santa Monica. I had been checking out apartments all throughout Palms, Mar Vista and West LA and decided on a 1-bdrm near the intersection of Hughes Ave. and Palms Blvd.

My questions:

1) Did I choose a relatively safe place to live? It seemed fairly quiet. I was told by most everyone I talked to that it was a nice place, and it did seem pretty nice. The local stores and restaurants were full of 20-somethings... kind of like being in college. However, Venice Blvd., especially near the 405, looks pretty bad... but everything north of Venice seemed nice.

2) What's my commute going to be like around 10, 11AM? How should I get there? My work is fairly flexible as to what time I walk in.

3) Anyone here play soccer? I want to find an adults' league or something to join (I'm 26). Mar Vista Rec Center is very nearby and I played there last summer when I interned, but I didn't learn of any leagues.

Thanks a lot for your help; this forum has been great in learning more about LA!

1) Palms is a decent area. You should be ok. My best friend lives about 5 blocks from that intersection, and his place is totally safe.

2) Could be about 20 minutes. What part of Santa Monica?

3) Good luck! Soccer requires running. WAIT! You're not a chick are you? HA!

I'd add that you should make sure that your building has secured parking. I knew someone who had a car stolen in Palms, because the parking wasn't gated or at all secure.

I used to live on Hughes and Venice. Its pretty close to where you are moving. I lived there for about 5 years and never had a problem. Good luck!
