Downtown!

OK, I don't think you'll find anything really nice with a reasonable commute. But downtown is okay (mostly), has nightlife and social stuff, and is a reasonable commute.

Pasadena / Altadena, Glendale, Burbank? Not ideal from a commuter standpoint, but better than a Long Beach or Santa Monica commute (I think).

How long will this job go on for? And if he business is headquarterd in Newport is this just a rare job that is located in LA or do they normal work in this area? If they don't and most of the jobs are in Orange County then I would find a spot that might be more convenient in the long run versus for just this job.

Check out the metro blue line to Long Beach.

You could also take the 105 west to the South Bay, but I think it is crowded in the PM

You might try just heading west on big streets.
Playa del Rey, Westchester and El Segundo are viable options. But may not have the nightlife the OP is looking for. BUT, nightlife is close by to these cities. The reason I throw them out there is that the commute to from Huntington Park should be very reasonable- no longer than 15-20 mins, generally, at the times noted to the offramp of Imperial Hwy. Surface street commute from Huntington Park should not even be considered.
