ok, let me preface this post with 'i know that you are supposed to register your vehicle within ten days of moving into the beautiful state of CA', that being said:

I am driving a vehicle that is 'owned and registered' to my parents [cheaper, easier, and multiple other lame excuses for my lack of responsibility]. im not in school and i work and pay rent.

id like to get a CA drivers license and register and insure a motorcycle, but i would also like to continue driving the car around whenever possible.

as i have no intention of actually registering the car in CA, is it still possible to get the license and the bike [or second vehicle of any sort] without having to also register the out of state vehicle.

im not a bum or some jackass, im just inquiring about the possibility.

thanks
AB

It's actually 20 days from entering the state. Don't know about bikes, but you have to register the car. If the title is in your parents name, they have to sign the title over to you, or you have to fill out a couple forms.

If the car is in his parents name, as long as he is insured to drive it, he should be able to drive the car, right?

As far as getting a regular license...you can get it even if you don't "own" or have a car under your name. If you don't plan on driving the car simply state that your parents were in town but left the car as they flew out of state for an emergency. I don't see a problem with this...other than CA not getting more money.

another question...

my car registration is going to come up again in May, right around the time I plan to move to CA. Can i just renew my registration in WI, and then get a license in CA? How much is typical vehicle registration in CA - in WI it just went up to $75.

Getting a CA license within 20 days is the most important though, right?

I don't understand why people always feel the need to get around the law. There is no reason for the car to registered to your parents. The car doen't have to be in their name to pay for it, if that's the goal. If you're responsible and mature enough to move across the country, you should be responsible enough to follow the law where you plan to live.

Depends on the car...if you own or not...I think my brand new car was a few hundred($350ish?). My owned Chevy was only $60 or close to it. My dads new-er SUV was above $400 I believe.

your parents own the car and you are insured and licensed to operate the vehicle. you dont need to register it here, but the insurance company could have issues if you get into an accident while living here while the vehicle is insured under a different garaging address

you need to get your own license and you need to take a motorcycle safety course before getting your motorcycle license(i believe).

also, you may have a minor problem getting insurance for the bike since many car insurance companies will not insure a motorcycle if you do not have a regular vehicle insured as well
