I love old houses, especially Craftsman homes, and like to drive through the historical district of Pasadena drinking in the Arts and Crafts style architecture. My dream is to someday buy an old Craftsman fixer upper and restore it to its former glory.

Does anyone here live in/near Bungalow Heaven who could tell me a bit about the neighborhood vibe? Also, does anyone know if the Gamble House offers tours, and is there an admittance fee?

Gamble House does offer tours, and yes, it costs money: The Gamble House by Greene & Greene in Pasadena, California: official website (it's not in Bungalow Heaven, although you probably already know that.)

The Gamble House tour is a great tour.

Here's a link with some background in Bungalow Heaven:

I live in BH and while the immediate neighborhood (within a few blocks radius) is good the farther northwest you go the rougher the neighborhood. The day we flew home a few days after Christmas, there was a shooting about 2 blocks away. We have also seen our share of police responding to calls in the neighborhood. But the neighbors are friendly and the houses are well kept for the most part

I live in the supposed "bad" area to the west of Bungalow Heaven, and absolutely love it. The bungalow we bought was about $100,000 cheaper than those in BH, and within a few months we've gotten to know all our neighbors and feel completely safe here.

It's funny, because when we started looking we kept being told over and over how we shouldn't live west of BH, and when we finally visited here we realized how much more we liked it here. BH is great, but "Pill Hill" is certainly worth checking out...

Thanks for all the info!

What's "Pill Hill?" Is it a euphemism for the area west of BH?

My wife's aunt and uncle own two houses in BH and it is a very nice area. But to anyone who wants to own an old house, have fun with that. I've owned a couple and there is always something to fix...what a money pit!

Pill Hill is an area west of Bungalow Heaven which in the 20's was home to many, many doctors, and got named "Pill Hill" back then unofficially.

One of the things I like about this area versus Bungalow Heaven is the size of some of the lots. We got our 20's bungalow on a lot that measures more than a third of an acre - in the middle of Pasadena.

There are nights when I'm totally amazed that we can sit out back and hear nothing other than crickets, and look out and only see darkness, trees and stars.

I never expected living in LA county to be like living in the country.

Owning an old home isn't for everyone. If you're handy and are good at restoration, you can do a lot of the work yourself if it's needed. If you have to hire in on everything, yep, you'll be bankrupt in no time.
