What kind of salary would need a family of 4 to live in the LB/LA Area? (Long Beach: for rent, daycare)

Hi Everyone,

We are about to get an offer from a company to relocate within the LA area and wanted to know very approximately what salary you would recommend to be high enough to live on for a 4 members family (children of 2 and 4)?

We are now living in Europe and do not have a too precise idea of the cost of living overthere and as my husband will be the only one to work, we are trying to figure out what would we need to be looking at this move with confidence...

In a first instance, we would certainly be looking for renting an appartment/house around Long Beach, certainly in Belmont shore...

Do not worry, we are not looking for a very detailed picture but more trying to find out the acceptable range???

Honestly depends on how you live your life.

A family of four can do ok on $75K a year, even in Belmont Shores, provided you are willing to accept and rent small housing(2 bd/1ba), and are careful with your money. Things go better the more you make.

People more tend to run into problems when they require certain specific housing requirements and standards of living/luxury items they just *can't* do without.

Thanks a lot for your answers but I realize that our questions were very vague.

Actually, as I told before, I won't be working but only my husband at the beginning. However to get a chance for me to find some work and also to get involved in local associations, we would like to put our children during 2 days at least at a daycare and preschool for the older one.

Would you have any idea about their cost?

Then, following first echos we had, people told us that Belmont Shore is a nice place for a family to live because of the beach, its walkability, abundance of shops, its nice atmosphere, safety, and so on...

Would you agree with that? How is it really to live there with a family?

How would you compare it to downtown Long Beach?

Or would you advise another location in the area?

Sorry for all the bothering but that would really be helpful for us to get some more insigths into the surroundings ...

Downtown is much more urban than Belmont Shore. Many people love raising families in Belmont Shore for the reasons you stated above. However, if you want a suburban, play in the back yard type atmosphere, Belmont Shore is not that. Like most coastal areas the lots are small and close together. For the walkability and other things but a quieter place with bigger lots you could live in the section called Belmont Heights or Belmont Park. All of the areas are really nice in their own way and are right next to eachother but they have differentiating characteristcs.

How much are they offering? You will have to pay state taxes along with the regular federal taxes. Plus childcare, food and stuff like that. Personally, anyone that comes to California, in my opinion, needs to be making $100K and up to live comfortably and be able to save money. Sure you could do it for less but how comfortable would you be...

We'll definetly consider Belmont Park and Belmont Height as well and have a look to what we prefer...

About the money they will be offering, we will know it next week.

At this time, I will certainly come back to the forum to get some more of your expert advices...
