Someone making $40K, single, no deductions, takes home right around $2K a month in CA. Obv $800-1100 a month rent is the vast majority and basically the only factor when you consider other cities/towns outside CA have rents in the $400-600/mo range.
John
The high cost of rent in the city is beyond anyone's control as it reflects what the market will bear. My point is, one can control their monthly expenses by eliminating "non-essentials" such as a monthly car payment by buying a used vehicle for cash and placing minimum required insurance on it. This can save hundreds of dollars a month, making that high rent a little easier to handle. I still have friends in LA that do nothing but complain about how expensive the cost of living is in So. Cal, yet they refuse to give up that new car or truck which is bleeding their checking accounts. This makes absolutely no sense to me.

Yes, its doable and no they are not all on foodstamps. Its mostly dependant on one's lifestage in his/her career and if that career pays well.

I have a number of friends in LA County who are doing just this. Some struggle more than others depending on their careers and expenses. But the ones in higher paying jobs aren't doing bad at all.

Its pretty basic economics really. If your pay is generally low and you live in LA, with or without a family, it is going to be more of a struggle than living lets say in the Midwest where rent is cheap.

It is a choice of the couple if its a need to use food stamps just to get by. Anyhow, it was also their choice (i assume) to be just a one income family. Sometimes it helps for couples to be partners in life... and bills. Don't get me wrong. Am just being practical. Anyhow, maybe it's just me.

Did the one who lost the job get a bye out, meaning that the company is paying for a set amount of time while the former employee is out of work? What about unemployment?

Somebody with 7 years at a medium or major corporation would almost certainly get a buy out, either a lump sum or continued salary for a period (6 months?) and also be eligible for receiving unemployment benefits (although probably not concurrently with any salary continuation, but beginning when the salary payments terminate).

So he's a stay at home mom and she's a marketing manager? Must be interesting...

It's funny how spell checkers can tell only if a word is spelled correctly, not whether it's the right word.

By the way, my comments above about a buy out were based upon my own experience at a major corporation, 5 years of service in a salaried position, got laid off and bought out: 6 months of continued salary if I agreed not to file any legal action (got my paycheck every two weeks as usual, mailed to my home address), and then got the usual unemployment insurance benefit beginning when my company paychecks stopped.
