My name is Taylor and I've been trying my best to get into the oil refinery field but I'm finding it quite hard to do. Can anyone lead me in the right path to my career that I've been wanting for quite some time now.

1) Leave CA. The traditional energy industry is leaving. When CA gets to paying 8 to 9 for a gallon of their specialty gasoline is shipped in from Houston or Indonesia, maybe they will come back.

2a) There are a number of new energy plays opening up in Texas, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, ect. You could easily move to Texas and find a day job while you try to get on with a producer.

2b) Find a power plant or energy operator program. These are two year AA or certification programs but most of them are not in SoCal. If you are in a "hot" area, you may even get co-op or intern positions with companies that will basically pay for your school and pay you to work at the same time. That's the best solution. Most of those locations are in Texas or North Dakota but the programs are in many other areas. Aerospace operator training from the infomercial "colleges" won't get you in. You'll need a state or community college program.

What did you do before? You might get hired on just by moving to an area if you have a technical background. Some of our best inexperienced operator hires were professional photographers and military personnel.

Post your question in the Oklahoma City forum and you'll be inundated with responses at once; Norman OK and Edmond, OK, both with unemployment rates under 4%, are constantly ranked among the best cities to live in by Money Magazine and numerous other publications, and the thriving energy industry is one key reason why.

Norman is also home to the University of Oklahoma, so check out their website for educational opportunities in the area, and since Oklahoma City is also the capital of the state, their website will also have a ton of information for you.

Good luck!
