Er, majority means more than 50%.

And, illegal or not (and like it or not), Hispanics are going to the majority in California very soon, amigos.

Yup, the Census sure missed about 400,000 residents in Los Angeles city and about 300,000 in LA County. I thought there were about 10 million in the county alone.

If you add in Hispanic whites, yes. Not to mention the number of Californians with a non-Hispanic white parent and a Hispanic parent has long been pretty sizeable. There are also many Californians of white/Asian and white/black parentage.

Ultimately, these racial/ethnic categories are going to become meaningless due to ethnic/racial mixing. Which is a good thing, IMO.

From an anecdotal perspective, perhaps it doesn't seem all that odd that the L.A. population didn't rise as much as was hoped for or expected by some folks. There is evidence which supports the notion that plenty of folks have moved out of the city or bypassed it as an option altogether. Whether it has been families relocating to the Sunbelt, young singles moving back to their points of origin or alien immigrants opting for the less crowded Northwest, it's fair to say that as the population of Los Angeles increased in the past decade it also became less attractive to some; thereby mitigating the increase.

Short of radical changes in infrastructure, perhaps we are at or near Los Angeles' relative set-point in terms of the population level it is capable of maintaining.

Some people hope for more population? That's why I'm leaving (next month). Too many people. I have only one vote, only one pair of feet to head out of state. I'm doing my part to reduce overpopulation and I hope others do too.

Near? How about over? I can speak only for the SFV where I live, that for the most part we have all the streets and freeways we'll ever have, due to the unlikelihood of razing neighborhoods to make more streets, due to the impracticality of widening streets by taking private front yards, due to the impossibility of taking parking lanes and turning them into traffic lanes (because there'd be no place for people to park their cars or guests to visit).

I think we're already at 100% full occupancy. I'm moving over to allow one more to take my place. Enjoy!

I'm with Lovehound, I'm also moving over and allowing some other illegal immigrant (most likely LOL) to take my place. It's way overcrowded and I just get tired after a while of a "city" with about 75 different cities that are part of it. It's one thing to have different areas, it's another to have a string of dozens of cities connected together by dozens of overcrowded highways and then on top of that have some of the most oppressive laws and oppressive taxes and anti-business mentality of any state in the union.

This is truly a hell hole if there ever was one. The weather is the only great thing about it and they have taken the idea of having great weather and justified everything under the sun with it. I got news, there are a lot of other great states with great weather too, from lower-tax Arizona to no-tax Texas and no-tax Nevada, and even no-tax Florida. In fact this is one of the only sunbelt states with a state income tax at all, and it's extremely high.

Goodbye, Los Angeles, I won't miss you.

To all the chronic grumblers may I politely suggest: Whey not just leave already?

You can be the unwelcome outsiders that the decent citizens of your new community complain about. It'll be karmic relief for everyone.

I'm sure for most of us, we wish we could leave already, but it does take some time and planning. If I could just up and leave tomorrow, I would do it, but I have business to conclude and will not be ready to move until later this year. It's bad to be unhappy and complain about the place you live -- it puts you in a bad mental place, it's negative, and you eventually just need to do something about it.

I am looking forward to moving because I don't like the state of mind I've been in while living in Los Angeles lately, I need a change, so trust me, I can't wait to get the hell out of this miserable dump, but I can't do that until later this year sadly.

I wouldn't call it a "hell hole" but there certainly are problems that need to be addressed to turn L.A. back into something that could be as nice as it was back in the '70s-'80s.

A significant part of my desire to move is that I have never lived any place other than L.A. I'm living within 10 miles of where I grew up and attended grade school and college and I've never lived outside that radius. I have no idea what it would be like to live somewhere other than Los Angeles. I've just retired and for once and possibly my last opportunity, I want to go somewhere else (out of state) and see if I like living there better. I can always come back.

I'm leaving next month (April) unless escrow falls out. I've been working on fixing up my house and putting it on the market since last summer. It seems that all my hard work has paid off.

One of my pet peeves is New Yorkers who move to Los Angeles and then complain that LA is not as good as NYC. I made up my mind years ago that one day when I move to a new place I'll embrace the new place. I'm the one who gets to select where I'll go and I have all the time in the world to make a good choice. I know there's no perfect place anywhere. I certainly would never be so rude to move to some place and then complain to the locals that it's not as good as where I came from. I want to make new friends and that's no way to get people to like you.

You sound so much like I feel! Whether or not anybody else understands, I feel that you and I perfectly understand each other's desire to GTFO. Circumstance put me a year ahead of you in the exit plan. Good luck!

Doesn't matter what the "census" says, every time I'm trying to get somewhere there's at least 4 million people in my way on the road!
