Why does it sound so weird? I was raised in Beverly Hills and I feel uncomfortable telling people "I'm from Beverly Hills", even though most of Beverly Hills isn't even near rich. Beverly Hills is so strangely exaggerated in the media.

I just feel so weird when I go out of town and tell people were I am from. They just stare at me weird.

What do you guys think?

So, let 'em stare. You should see the looks I get when I say I'm from Fontana.

Eh, I still remember the days when you'd tell people you lived in Las Vegas, and the first thing they'd ask is, "do you live in a hotel?"

After moving here, I got to see how Las Vegas is represented in the media to the rest of the world. It really is weird.

Unfortunately, the situation is the same for you, and it's unlikely to ever change. Sensationalism and narrow representation will always be what sells!

People elsewhere don't get that these are normal places. It's like some rural person from Kansas who meets someone who lives in a Manhattan highrise, or next to the El in Chicago or in a Beverly Hills mansion.

Most of Beverly Hills is the wealthiest 5% of America more or less, save for the few not so nice complexes near La Cienega and the 20 somethings who split a 2 bedroom in a nice building. I just read that 50% of Beverly Hills is comprised of renters, but those rents are still in the top 10% of America.

Beverly Hills is still undoubtedly very rich. The 90210 zip code is possibly the most expensive in LA county, if not it's in the top 3. the most expensive restaurants and shops are in Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills has a lot of well known celebrity landmarks and probbaly more celebrities live there than anywhere else. so i think it is justified.

If you're really bothered by it and are outside of the area, you could just say "I'm from LA," which people from elsewhere will generally understand to mean "somewhere within the Los Angeles metro area." And if speaking locally, then presumably people won't have such media-shaped stereotypes, as they've probably actually been to Beverly Hills or at least know that you didn't, I assume, grow up on Rodeo Drive.

Vary -- that reminds me of my friend's parents. They like to tell people that they got married in Las Vegas. Well, they did, but they were living there at the time and it was a traditional wedding. Everyone assumes they mean the kitschy drive-through chapels or something at the very least involving a last-minute ceremony and perhaps an Elvis impersonator.

Beverly Hills gets the prestige because it's one of the few suburbs of a major city that is known nationally. Most people from Burbank or Glendale or Playa del Rey would say they are from LA when they go out of town. Beverly Hills folks can say they are from Beverly Hills and the fisherman from Maine down to the Texas oil man knows Beverly Hills simply due to the prestige. Such a small city has had so many movies and tv shows taking place at least in part there, that it seems way bigger than it is.

Beverly Hills only has 35,000 people and according to wikipedia, has an average single family home price of $2.2 million. The highest priced Chicago suburb is Kenilworth at about $1.2 million.

If it bothers you that much tell them you're from Compton. That should put an end to all that nonsense.
