This is serious, please no sarcasm or trolling. I really need to know this information.

My friend who is 17 and caucasian needs to walk through compton from Hawthorne at 12am - 6am. (I can't say what for.) But the destination is the greyhound station. Will he make it?

Everyone keeps telling me it's a bad idea that he'll get shot, but I read that crime rate went down there. Is he gonna die? I'm really worried now..
He said he's gonna wear all black and a hood, this is probably worse as it'd mark him as a target resembling a gang member...

Please, someone tell me the chances of him getting randomly shot..

At 2009 Compton murder rates, it would take 2,604 years for any given person to be murdered in Compton, and 107 years for any given person to be assaulted (assuming they never left Compton).

Your friend will supposedly be in Compton for 1/4 day (or six hours):
-365 days in a year X 107 years it would take to get assaulted = 1 out of 39,055 odds he'll be assaulted assuming he's there an entire day (24 hours).
-X 4 because he will be in Compton for only 1/4 day or 6 hours. = 1 out of 156,220.

So it's a 1 in 156,220 chance your friend will be assaulted, using Compton's official reported crime stats (assuming all crimes are reported).

But this doesn't include intangibles or implied odds so all the numbers go out the window anyway.

But why does a 17-year-old NEED to walk anywhere, let alone walk anywhere during the middle of the night? Is he out of freewill?

FYI, Greyhound stations in any city would scare a decent portion of the population.

It all seems like a silly proposition, is he going to be murdered or shot if he doesn't walk through Compton?

I think that he will constantly be hassledby the law unless maybe he carries a bible and dresses in a white shirt and black tie. Then they would think he's crazy and leave him alone.

You really can't walk anywhere between midnight and 6 A.M. wearing all black and a hood without looking suspicious and getting patted down for weapons, drugs, or stolen property.

Tell your friend to wear a blue AND red doorag while he's walking. That will confuse both sides.

Long story short, he's running away from home.
But, he didn't make it to the 12-6am one and left at 6am to make the 12pm one instead.
Is that less riskier?

No, now it's much more likely that he'll get hit by a car in the morning commute. I'd take my chance with the gang bangers during his 12A-6A window of opportunity. Tell him to dress like a Dodger fan and no one will give him any problems.

Yeah, less risk. Not to mention there will be MTA buses running by that hour too. No matter what you look like or what you're wearing, you will look suspicious walking out in the streets in those hours.

Why is he running away from home? Can you at least get him some help if there is trouble in his home..running away is not going to solve anything as we know a lot of runaways get caught up in drugs, prostitution or whatever.

Is there anything you can do for him? Can he stay with your family?

He tried.. and look I really don't want to be answering specifics. If he does make it, the cops might look to forums like this as the first place. I just need to know the risk? He has somewhere to go, after, so he won't be on the road. He just needs to make it out of the state first. Which is this whole mess of what I'm asking about...

And no. I can't do much, I'm in another state (AZ). I wish to god I could.

He made it to the station and out of Compton alive.
