I have to go to downtown San Diego. Has anyone taken the Amtrak from LA to SD. I will be going from the Van Nuys stop. The Amtrak ticketing system is broken online.

How much does it cost? Was it on time? Was the ride ok?

Yes, I've done it a few times. Unlike much of interstate Amtrak the Pacific Surfliner is usually on time, but not always. I don't recall the ticket prices, but it wasn't much. Maybe $25 or $30 each way. From Van Nuys you probably have to transfer trains at Union Station, but if your train is late they wait for you.

I've done it multiple times (from Union Station to SD), and it's always been on time. The ride is great, especially after you get down to southern Orange County; very scenic, and at one point the train runs along the beach.

Awesome, seems like it's easier than the car. How long does it take?

I take it to go see my brother and his family for vacation. I don't pay that much attention to if it is on time since it's for leisure but I have never noticed any serious delays.

I used to take the train all the time from between NYC and DC. I love the train.

As far as price, it's as someone else mentioned $25-30 but I think that is for non-peak hours.

Oh wait there was some issues with flooding when it rained a lot around the holiday season. But how often does that happen.

Pacific Surfliner, $32 from Van Nuys (VNC) to San Diego (SAN). 3 1/2-4 hours.

Awesome thanks. I'm going to go visit a friend overnight in downtown SD and I figure it's cheaper and easier than flying. Plus I won't have to pay to park.

i'm not sure you can fly commercially to SD from LA and I doubt it's cheaper than driving.
