To echo what Sandyco said, check out the building beforehand for Section 8 tenants. The problem is not with the tenants themselves, but when their friends from the old neighborhood come over.

If a building is predominantly female tenants, that is a good sign that it is a safe and secure building.

Between Ventura and the 101 has the best options because you can walk to everything and it is more young professionals. I wouldn't go much further north than the Freeway.

Any suggestions on specific apartment complexes in Sherman Oaks? I was hoping for a washer/dryer in the unit, but looks like that might be hard to find based on some of the apartment search websites I've seen. Thanks!

Washer/dryer in unit is tough to find anywhere in LA.

Just for a heads up, LA also has a few for granted appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers, and central AC/heat.

I got lucky and my place had dishwashers and central AC/Heat, but I had to get a fridge. Sometimes you get lucky and the previous tenant will sell you the fridge or you can go on craigslist to buy one, or just get a new one from Sears.

Most of the complexes are small, but the bigger ones are The Plaza, The Encore (north of the freeway---nice with some young professionals, but not walkable to anything), Natick Park.

There are plenty of nice smaller buildings (I live in one) and you can usually find those advertised on Rent.com. Sign for an account (it's free). Craigslist will give you some idea, but I would avoid anything without a picture. Rent.com is pretty reputable.
