Great community, schools, sense of neighborhood? Really trying to find an 'oasis' in LA where kids can be kids. Am coming from the South where people knock on doors to borrow eggs and sugar. Really. I can keep up with the Joneses at work but would really like to avoid this at home. Ideas? Let's assume any budget works for purposes of this discussion.
Thanks!

Definitely not somewhere in Southern California (and probably not in the US either).

But to restrict this to the L.A. area: probably Burbank. Maybe Santa Monica or Beverly Hills but conspicuous consumption would be the negatives there. Maybe Culver City. Maybe South Pas. Maybe Hermosa Beach or Redondo Beach. I really don't think SoCal is very conducive to raising kids, but if you have to and you have the money....

In LA County? Money absolutely no object: Rolling Hills, Rancho Palos Verdes. Otherwise: Lakewood, Cerritos, Santa Clarita, eastern Long Beach.

Most of the places you listed would be great as well as So Pasadena and further out Glendora. Glendora isn't as pricey or affluent but still has that small town, know your neighbor attitude.
