Secure a job before locating. Also the cost of living is sky-high compared to SC.....I see you are in SC.....YOu will experience culture shock....Where in SC will you be moving from.

Thanks for the info. I'm moving from Greenville, SC. However, I've lived in Myrtle Beach, SC so the culture change isn't a problem. I also visit Miami quite often. I've applied for several jobs there in L.A. And I do plan to get a job 1st. I currently work for a cable company & I'm hoping to be able to get job for cable company there based off my experience. Do u ever regret living there (as I assume u do)? I'm such a beach gal, I tried Greenville (which is the city for SC lol) just to see if it was for me & I like it here, but I miss the water soooooo much. And I love trying new places & meeting new ppl/cultures. I think it will be exciting & a challenge.

If you ask 1,000 different people you'll probably get 1,000 different reactions. Here's my take on it.

I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area, in upper-middle class suburbs in the San Gabriel Valley. And then I moved away and lived in other states for many years. Now I'm back home--in the San Gabriel Valley--and can state categorically that I will never move away from Southern California again.

The opportunities here are hard to match anywhere else so, yes, it's definitely a place to start a new life. You can basically reinvent yourself, if that's what you're after, or you can just be the person you already are.

Because California in general and the Los Angeles area in particular are so accepting of all kinds of people, you'd be hard pressed to feel out of place here! Basically, anything you want to be you can be, and you'll feel right at home.

I love everything the LA area has to offer, including its natural beauty--mountains, the ocean, canyons, streams, lakes, the desert--cultural opportunities, its diversity in terms of ethnicity, entertainment opportunities, and--of course!--its great year round weather.

How you'll like it depends on a number of factors, including where you choose to live. Living in downtown LA is entirely different from living in one of its many suburbs--and even the suburbs differ dramatically from each other. So do your homework, carefully pick where you want to live, and then take the plunge!

Hah, you too huh? I'm from Greenville, and I'm moving to LA, hopefully, in July. I found a job in the area that had the ability to transfer there.

Be certain you have a job in your hand before moving. Unemployment is about 30% here in L.A. I was born in East L.A. (no longer welcome to white people) and now live at the beach near LAX. I'm taking early retirment because of the poor job situation and being too old for the job market. I made my money and now I'm living on it comfortably at this time. I wouldn't think of living anywhere else because this place is where everything is happening at once. Be aware that CA has one of the highest rates of taxation and L.A. has a high cost of living but not as high as Manhattan, NY. Where you live will have a big affect on your experience. There are certain parts of town I would not recommmend. You will need to find that out yourself. The valleys are way too hot in the Summer and the better neighborhoods are on the Westside. You may want to look into Orange County down South of here where it's less congested. Good luck...

REALLY?? How Ironic! I'm still in the process of finding a job. I fill out applications online all the time. Have you ever been to L.A.? And if I may ask, how old are you?

Thanks so much, this is very helpful. I love that its so diverse. And most ppl from L.A say the same about being accepted of all kinds of ppl & race. The South is well known for racism, unfortunately.

30%? That's a bit high. More like 12%. If unemployment was 30%, there would be civil unrest like in the Middle East. It's more of a skills mismatch than anything else. Construction was hit hard and it is very difficult for those workers to transition.

LA's cost of living is high compared to most of the US, but not if you came from a major city. I've found LA to be roughly comparable to Chicago where I moved from. Apartment rent was similar, gas prices higher in LA, but food prices lower in LA so it balanced out.

The U-6 number - a more reliable indication of unemployment - is about 24%.

Jobs leaving are another factor. Southern California in general has never returned to the number of jobs that it had in 1991.

You'd know Chi-town better than I would as you lived there while I only have family there and have visited but never lived there. In my more limited experience, it's expensive but L.A.'s more expensive. OTOH, L.A. is definitely significantly cheaper than NYC.
