Yes, there are the "Apartment for Rent" booklets. Those are free, and usually obtained outside some restaurants or liquor stores.

Weekly events - that's easy. The L.A. Weekly is what you want; again, those are free, and found in the same newsstand with the apartment rental booklets. A new edition comes out every Thursday.

Magicfan, when in July are you going to be here? I hope it's not the weekend of the 16th and 17th. The 405 Fwy. is going to be shut down in the Sepulveda Pass for 53 hours beginning Friday evening, so if you'll be here then, getting around will be a challenge as everyone is going to clog the canyon roads and the 101 trying to get from the SF Valley to Hollywood and West L.A. Just be prepared for that, please.

I think he said he was sticking to the Valley neighborhoods in which case it will only be bad getting to and from LAX.

The 101 will be bad that weekend. I'm allowing 2 hours to get to work that morning.

"Apartment for Rent" booklets usually list large complexes that tend to be a little more expensive. On the plus side, these places are more likely to have a vacancy that would allow you to move in immediately.

To find a good deal, check craigslist. Also try driving around in the neighborhoods you especially like.

Yea, I keep reading about "Carmaggedeon" coming in the next few weeks. Luckily, my planned visit is 25th - 29th, so I should be good.
