I am moving to LA in september and I have a few apartments in mind. two of them are located in the westlake area. they are shown on the map with blue dots. the apartments are located at the border between westlake and downtown. Do you think those areas are safe to live? they have 24 hour security and gated garage and everything and I'm not planning to walk at night or day.

1) 6th and st.Paul Ave
2) 3rd and s.bixel st ish..

One more question, is it safe to drive through the wilshir blvd at nights?

I've heard many stories about the gang activities in LA so I am little bit concerned about my safety. But i've also heard lots of great things going on in LA and excited to move there!

any comments on those locations? Thank You!!

Default Look before you leap

I would highly recommend you check out any place before you move. That being said, you've highlighted a very sketchy part of L.A. What are you looking for specifically? What is your budget?

Sanna: You would be fine in those EXACT locations. Looks like you've identified one of the many new apartment buildings immediately west of Downtown LA. The Medici or Visconti or Piero.....I happen to think the exterior of those buildigns are ugly. HOWEVER, they are supposed to be very nice inside and they are professionally managed. Lots of university students (USC, FDIM) and young professionals live in those buildings.

Elgatoloco is right that the "Westlake" area is sketchy but the exact area you've pinpointed is actually referrred to a "Central City West" and is not that bad. A lot of posters on here that haven't been to downtown la in a long time may not realize how much Central City West has changed and how it is now a growing residential neighborhood. I would just not go any further WEST from the area you've identified.

That said, despite all the apartments in the area it is not what you would call a bustling area teeming with nightlife. For that you'll have to cross over the freeway (The Harbor, 110 Fwy) and go into downtown LA which is only a few blocks away.

YES, it is safe to drive WILSHIRE Bvd. at at anytime of the day or night.

To put it in perspective for you, this link is to the Medici Apartments. In the same area you are looking into.

Los Angeles, California Apartments - The Medici Apartment Homes

The star quarterback for the Univ. of So. California (USC), Matt Leinart, lived there when he was playing for USC. Star quarterbacks from Orange County (like Leinart) don't live in dangerous places. You'll be fine if you choose to live there.
