Metrolink is cheaper than driving an hour each way with the way gas prices are right now; particularly if it is during rush hour. Plus a lot less stress.

Do people from other parts of the country think that a long commute to work is required by law in California?

I think they imagine 'downtown' being something completely different.

I'd never make that commute. I wouldn't even do the commute I have now if I didn't work from 6:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.! I work in Woodland Hills, twelve miles away, but by 7:00 the 101 already starts clogging up. As I get older I become more and more allergic to traffic!

I understand everyone saying minimize your commute which I intend to do, the problem is that we'll have to compromise between where my gf gets a job and where I get a job. I live 20 miles from my job now in Orlando and it takes me less than 20mins, but there is not much traffic here, so I was trying to get a feel of what 20 miles is like in the LA area. I'm from lower Fairfield County CT and we measure our commute in time also vs. distance.

What if my gf gets a job in Hollywood and me in Anaheim, unfortunately with the way the economy is and us being new in town we might have to settle for that for the time being.

If your gf already has a job in Hollywood (which you indicated in other posts) use THAT as your starting point, NOT downtown LA, and work your way out from there. Limit your radius. Otherwise you may as well stay where you are for all the time you will have together.

One thing you can start doing is become familiar with LA traffic patterns by tuning into Sigalert.com Los Angeles Traffic Map during (because it is real time) potential commute times.
You can also use google maps traffic at time and day for historical traffic and Traffic Predict.com - Los Angeles Traffic Map

then either one or both of you will have a miserable commute. jobs are spread all over the region, not just in LA. I would start by living near where ever the first job is found then looking within 10-15 miles of that location for another job. If you nail down a job in anaheim, your gf can limit her search to that area as well. FWIW OC has a lower unemployment rate than LA, so there are jobs and some good paying ones as well. however, if you really want to live in LA, you shouldn't be looking into working in anaheim.
