I love being in downtown (for the most part) and the lofts look great, but I'm still not sure I'd want to be there 24/7. Nothing against downtown in particular; I just don't want to be in any one place 24/7. If I still have my downtown job in a year or two, I'll probably make my move to Beverly Hills or Brentwood.

Another bunch of crap. First off, LA county beaches are largely horrible compared to OC beaches. The LA County beaches are filthy, feature nasty water, in some cases are graffiti ridden, and are often inaccessible. OC beaches tend to be cleaner, have cleaner water, are completely accessible, and are less crowded. Since its about a 35-40 minute drive from DTLA to PCH/Goldenwest in HB, I think its hardly some horrible tradeoff to be living downtown in regards to beach access.
As to the canyons....again the canyons in LA County between SFV and the coast largely are NOT fun nor scenic, particularly compared to a drive along Angeles Crest Highway above La Canada...only about a 15 minute drive from DTLA.

Not all of 'em. I have a friend, car-less, has 2 dogs, takes busses/trains/bike to where he needs to go. His basic amenities are all d-town: best DVD store, big bookstore, dry cleaning, lotsa restaurants. He catches lots of plays mid-town, goes to movies, you know the sort of thing 'normal' 'burbanites do.
Safe to say not driving is where the pleasure lies, at least for him. A pretty good life if u ask me.

This is a really good point. I walk to work, walk to do shopping, and walk to much of my entertainment. Basically I only drive on weekends.
