Decided to visit Venice Beach for the first time yesterday with friends. This was our first time visiting and we really came to chill on the beach and have a good time, but that didn't happen...we were very uncomfortable. The beach seemed dirty and there was seaweed everywhere, there were a ton of flies all over the place because of the seaweed which made our visit horrible. There were so many children there that were screaming and crying because they were scared/tired of all the flies bothering them...lol After this visit I have no desire to go back! I wonder if this is the norm with all the beaches..

I've never been to Venice Beach but I've spend alot of time around Santa Cruz and I have never been a beach fan. There are some spots that are much much better than others but sand, flies, seaweed, smells, etc. just aren't my thing. I appreciate the ocean and beaches near me from afar, like a balcony or deck! LOL.

I just moved to LA and I'm no fan of LA area beaches. California beaches, YES, but the ones around LA? NO WAY.

Santa Monica beach, sleazy? Crowded, yes. Not sleazy in my view.
You've never been to
Pt. Dume/Zuma which are in Malibu but past Malibu Colony where many of the homes are packed up against PCH. No doubt some of the nicest and most beautiful urban beaches anywhere.

Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach are nice too.

The only people that swim in the water at Venice Beach are the tourists and the surfers.
What made you think Venice Beach was the optimal beach for laying out? Pt. Dume, Zuma, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach are better suited for this. Venice Beach is for watching the circus freaks on the boardwalk.
Are you serious, there was "seaweed" at the beach? Go figure.

It sounds like one of those times when a bunch of that kelp (I don't think it was seaweed) washed up and the flies like it. Bad luck. Most of the time that isn't a problem or the kelp is in one or two places - you just sit somewhere else.

How could Venice Beach be less cleaner than Santa Monica Beach? Maybe because it's within the City of Los Angeles. The city has neglected Venice for so long.

The complaints of the original poster really don't have anything to do with lack of government services. It was a completely natural marine condition he is complaining about.
