If one is exchanging their driver's license from another state to CA, is the written and road test required, or just the written?

Don't wanna do this unless I have the answer I want haha.

If you have a license from another country, you will be required to take a driving test. If you have a license from another state, the driving test can be waived. Taken from the DMV website.

How does one get the driving portion waived?

I moved to CA 2/2010 from Alabama and I only had to take a written plus a smog test and a vehicle verification (for my license plates???) at the DMV.

Only one wrong on the the written: I didn't know it was illegal to smoke in the car when there is a passenger under 18 in it.

Luckily I won't be changing my car plates, just the license. Car is remaining under a relative's name in another state since I am planning on leasing a new car in the next year. No reason to get dinged on the fees and taxes 2x.

Just the written. I recently did it, and I failed the written. The person marked off all of the correct answers for me so I could see what I had answered wrong. She then said I could take the test again (up to 3 times). She gave me the handbook to study, which I did for about 5-10 minutes and then went back. They gave me the exact same test, so I just marked off the ones she'd marked off and I was fine.

When I moved to CA more than 10 years ago, I recall just doing the written test..no road test! Study and you'll be fine!

If you are a US citizen then you need to take a written test, a driving test, get tested for incontinence, have an eye test, and a test to see how strong your back is. You will then be sent to see what your financial position is. They will want to know if you can support other families while you are residing in the state. Depending on how many people you can support will determine the level of clearance that your new drivers license will have on it. The more people you can suppor the less clearance you will have as you should be kept working so as to support all others who can not work at this time.

It is much easier if you show up here with no money. Then the state will not only give you a license, they will also give you a place to live, food to eat, free utilities, and plenty of other things. The best part is no tests for those with no money. I guess they figure that if you have no money chances are you will be riding on the amazing public transportation system that the state has, or you will be riding a bike around.

It is even better if you show up without any papers from another country. In that case you don't even have to bother getting a license. Just remember to drive extra slow and keep your car loaded with lots of other people.
