My friend and I are moving from Northwest Arkansas to the Los Angeles area and I'm having a bit of trouble finding a bank to switch to. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something that has decent benefits and preferably one that doesn't have a monthly fee. Any help would be appreciated!

The following larger banks still have free, no-strings-attached checking accounts:

Bank of the West
Union Bank

This bank is a smaller community bank based in Long Beach that also offers free checking:

Farmers & Merchants Bank

I personally prefer credit unions. Here are a couple that anyone can join and also offer free checking:

Kinecta Federal Credit Union
Nuvision Federal Credit Union

There are also the big-box banks like Bank of America, Chase and Wells Fargo, but none of them offer truly free checking accounts unless you meet certain requirements.

Good luck in whatever you decide.
