Hey Everyone,

I've been looking at vacant lots in the LA area, especially Hollywood. It appears that buying a lot, many for less than 150k, and building a modest home on it seems reasonable now. What do you think? I figure getting a lot for 150k and putting a "modern" modular home (they make them look so awesome now) would be such a good deal. AND I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT TRAILER PARK HOMES--no offense. There are lots on the Hollywood Hills for under 150k.
Again, it seems like a no brainer, but I know there is a catch. Anyone have any advice on pursuing this idea? Is it difficult/expensive to get permits, connect plumbing, and electricity? Thanks.

Contact the Building Department for the city of Los Angeles and the Department of Water and Power. Both should be able to provide a breakdown of the applicable fees or (at a minimum) a fee schedule that will allow you to estimate your costs.

If it were really that easy, no one would be complaining about the cost of housing in LA.

That's where he will find the answers to the questions he specifically asked. The agencies collecting the fees are the best source for the cost of the fees.

Developing an empty lot, espcecially on a hillside is more expensive than traditional flat land development...You may want to consider finding an existing home that has utilities then go from there.
