I got the job, and am doing the commute everyday. So far it's the 5 that's the worst. But my usual route takes me at least 1hr to get there, w/ some traffic it's 1.5 hr. *sigh I don't know how expensive is the Metrolink & GoldLine, but don't they also take forever?

It's a non-paid volunteer position. I've already had the experience, but not in that specific field and I just need a recommendation, so I don't want to move there. I want to do it for about 3 months. For now, it costs me about 4-5 gallons a day; 20 gallons per week is serious money. *sigh

If anyone thinks of a good idea, please don't hesitate to tell me.
Have you tried continuing on the 710 past the 5?
Also, where in Pasadena is the position? That could really change things...

I wouldn't commute that distance even for a paying job! You must have the patience and determination of a Tibetan monk!

Good luck to you and hope it pays off at the end.

Metrolink :: Welcome and click on fare calculator ... The Gold Line would be free if you had a pass (or any type of valid Metrolink ticket)

I think I will take the train. Cheaper overall. And I cannot take the commute anymore after the first week.

I have one question: I planned the trip, and google kept suggesting using the Pacific Surfliner between Irvine & Union station. Can you ride on Surfliner (Amtrak) with a Metrolink ticket? I plan to leave Irvine at 8:30am, arrive in Pasadena at 10am. Then on the way back: leave Pasadena at 3pm, arrive in Irvine at 5pm.

Found it: Rail2Rail - Amtrak California

You can ONLY use the Surfliner IF you have a valid Metrolink monthly pass. Other Metrolink tickets are NOT valid on Amtrak. See Rail2Rail link in post below mine ...

I tried taking the 710 past the 5, local streets aren't that fast. It takes the same time. The company is at the top North of Pasadena. It's a 14 min walk from Sierra Madre Gold Line train station.

I am screwed then if I need a monthly pass...since it's already mid-month. Plus I'm only working 4 days a week. *sigh* I made the calculation more carefully : it costs just about the same to take the train or to drive. It takes me about 3hrs for a round trip in the car, 4.5 hrs for a round trip on the train. I guess I either have to call it quit soon and end the position within the month, or continue to pay out of my pocket for gas & train ticket.

Hmmm .... Another idea (but this ONLY works on Metrolink) is that you can purchase an OCLINK day pass for $7 (good for all-day, unlimited Metrolink/bus service throughout OC) and purchase a monthly pass/round-trip from Buena Park into Union Station ... It's significantly cheaper then doing the round-trips from Irvine to Union. Remember that the Gold Line is FREE with a valid Metrolink ticket/pass.
