Hi!
We are considering a move from The Valley to West Hollywood or the area around the Grove. We have a little one entering Kindergarten next year and are wondering about the local elementary schools: Laurel, Rosewood, Hancock, Gardner, West Hollywood. The great schools ranking is so different for schools so close to each other. Does anyone have any experience with any of these schools? Recommendations? Thanks a lot!

The demographics of those schools (other than Gardner, Hancock, and 3rd Street) really don't reflect the demographics of the neighborhood. Part of this is due to how many gays and Orthodox Jews are in the neighborhood, part of it is due to the number of older and childless people in the Weho/Fairfax/Hancock Park/Beverly Grove area, and part of this is due to the justified disdain for LAUSD among parents who care about their kids. It has often been said LAUSD schools resemble each other more than they resemble where they are located, and Laurel proves that. Laurel's demographics have zero relation to where the school is located. Not sure why Gardner, Hancock, and 3rd are the exceptions. It does seem like all of those schools except for Laurel do a pretty good job, but you'll have to move for middle school or hope your kid gets into a magnet or charter,

Not sure what your budget is, but consider renting in Beverly Hills instead. It's pretty close in price to WeHo and Beverly Grove and has a superior school district.

Thank you disgruntled la native! Are the schools really that much better in Beverly Hills to offset the higher cost of living? Are test score results the main difference?

They are much better. A lot of people specifically rent in Beverly HIlls just so their kids can go there.
I don't know if its much higher cost of living.. Beverly Hills is a pricy place to rent or buy, but it's not that much more (if at all) than West Hollywood or Beverly Grove.

Anyone here grow up in the LAUSD system? How was your experience?

I grew up in a different area, and my schools growing up were rated 7s which I don't think is necessarily exceptional, but I turned out fine.
