Hello!

We're thinking of buying in Los Angeles, and a property we found is south of 63st. on 8th ave. I checked LA Life and the safety number scared me, (0.5/10!?) so I was wondering if this area is safe? Thanks!

South LA has cleaned up tremendously, but, I'm still going to go with 'not safe'.

When buying a property in South LA, it helps to make sure that it is in the interior of a neighborhood, that is, it is not by one of the major cross streets. The middle of the residential neighborhoods are usually quiet, but, some of the major streets are sketchy at night time.

You'd do better in Leimert Park north of MLK Blvd, or up on the hill, or west of Crenshaw.

RE: You'd do better in Leimert Park north of MLK Blvd, or up on the hill, or west of Crenshaw.

Read more: Thinking of buying in Los Angeles (90043) area... Suggestions?

I would agree with this and also add west of Crenshaw, NORTH of Slauson. There is a large portion of the areaa, namely Windsor Hills & View Park, that is unincorporated LA County, not City of LA. Some, but not all, find this preferable (taxes, law enforcement, etc.) Baldwin Hills is City of LA. These are very nice areas. There is also a small portion of 90043 that's unincorporated LA Co south of Slauson near Ladera Park ( W 59, 60, 61, 62 & LaBrea/ Overhill area) that is OK.

As far as your crime activity, try South L.A. - Mapping L.A. - Los Angeles Times
You'll be able to see where cime prone areas are. Like Mike121 said, it's heavier on the major thoroughfares. Also, this map shows definite neighborhood boundaries that can help when realtors try to list properties actually in sketcky areas as if in safer near-by areas. Also, check the crime timelines on the map and you'll see that some of the residential areas I mentioned are as safe as areas like Miracle Mile and Studio City.

dont bother no one and no one bothers you. Check out the home first, even if its a nice area I have moved into two apartments only to be waken up by chickens in someone's backyard...

south central has changed a lot over the year, those numbers are prolly just gangbangers, dont stand near them to catch a stray bullet and your perfectly fine. No sarcasim at all. People are usally nice if you are.
