I am about to purchase real estate in the Eagle Rock area of LA. I am choosing this area as I have find something in my price range as well as it's a good neighborhood very close to stores, grocery, etc. The job I may accept will most of the time require me to drive to the Brentwood area - possibly even Santa Monica. Not sure on my hours yet, but they may be something like 10-7pm. Is this going to be a horrendous commute?

My sister used to do the commute from nearby HLP to Brentwood everyday from 2001-2003. She had a 9-5 type job. I rode with her a few times. It was an insane commute. Most people would think to take the freeway to the 110 into downtown, then the 10 west. then 405 north. My sister takes side streets into Chinatown then gets on the freeway from there, and exits 10 west around national or overland then side streets from there to Brentwood. It didnt sound logical. She leaves just before 7am and gets there about 8:30 which is earlier than she has to be there. She tried the glendale freeway into Silverlake or echo park all the way down to Santa Monica blvd, Beverly, Melrose, or Pico to the westside. She tried to do the 134 to the 405 south, but that was just really bad because you cant detour if there is a freeway accident. Going back to HLP, she usually leaves a little later after the 5pm rush hour. She goes grocery shopping, or to Santa Monica, or reads her book at the office.

If you can avoid the worst of rush hour, then the commute shouldn't be as bad, because many people have to be work by 9am. If only there was a subway from Downtown to Westwood and VA, it would make life easier.

Eagle Rock is an amazing location which has very easy access to Silverlake, Glendale, Pasadena and Downtown LA on local wide roads.
