I moved from Oregon a couple years ago, but still don't know that much about what areas are known for what around L.A. since I went more north and lived around Thousand Oaks for a while. I've been to a couple friend's houses in the Sherman Oaks/Studio City area and it seems like its more fun, with things to go do fairly close as opposed to the quietness of T.O. I don't have that large of a budget now though that I work part time and go to school (I could get up to 2 roomies to bring down price if needed) so I was hoping people would have some opinions on what areas might be a good fit for a younger person that would like to have fun options fairly close, but feeling safe is a big priority for me too. I work in Winnetka and would hope for a max commute of 40 mins or so.

Or am I dreaming if I think I'll be able to find an affordable, safe, place near a "happening" area....

If you work in Winnetka and go to school somewhere in the Valley, I would suggest Sherman Oaks, then Studio City, then Woodland Hills. Those are the most 20 something, single, professional, nightlife oriented areas of the Valley. Studio City has the most, but the commute is a bit farther than from Sherman Oaks. Woodland Hills is more people in their 30s.
