So I'm planning on moving to Highland Park with my family in the next couple of months, probably close to Aldama Elementary School on N Ave 50.
I was wondering if some of you can give me some feedbacks about this area.
How's the neighborhood? Safety? Shops?

Thanks in advance.

Highland Park has a very large Latino population with a mix of white's, Asian's and blacks - very diverse!
Like any place some areas are somewhat sketchy and you need to look around in person to get a feel for it. Generally speaking, "north of York" is considered more desirable but other areas are fine too (I live south of York) - I suggest staying away from large apartment complexes though. I go by that school on Avenue 50 everyday and from my couple of visits to the school it seems very well run.
Daytime safety generally isn't an issue but night time requires more caution - no need for alarm, just use common sense.
As for shopping - there are many groceries stores around that provide great variety and keeps prices down.
The main commercial drag is Figueroa Street with a bit of a "scene" developing on York between Avenue 50 and 52.
There is a 3 screen theater on Figueroa that plays first run films at reduced prices - gotta say that it can be like sitting in someone's living room though as there tends to be some chatter during the movie.
I hope this is helpful to you.

There is a website called the highlandpark-ca.patch.com, highlandpark.wordpress.com, a few facebook sites, and some on city-data.com that give you info what is going on in Highland Park.

I dont really know the area around Aldama Elementary School, but I did grow up around the Garvanza area. I come back often because of family, but HLP is always changing. It is no longer the rough scary 1990s. People these days are often walking the streets, riding their bikes, and slowly making it better.

There aren't alot of 'shops' closeby, though a short trip up El Paso will get you to Eagle Rock Blvd and then onto restaurants and shops.

The Highland Park Gold Line station isn't too far and as far as shops, neither is the original Forever 21. It's called Fashion 21 and it's a little dumpy, but it's the original.
