Currently about 8 miles. Which is a lot more than my last commute of 1/2 of a mile.

24 is pretty doable, I know lots of people that drive much more, if you can finaggle a way to go to work early or late, and miss the worst of the rush hour, then I imagine it wouldn't be so bad.

After a few months, maybe you'll be in a position to move closer to work (if it seems like a stable, long term job).

This is a point I've brought up before... I don't live in LA, but I have a 12 mile commute that takes 45 minutes each way. Since LA is the traffic capital, why does it take me so much longer to get places than many LA residents?

I've ran the gamut - I had a 27-mile commute a year back, which took me around 45 minutes on a good day to 1.5 hours on a really bad day. Then, I changed jobs and decided to rent a place closer to work, which put my commute at 5 miles each way. Now...I commute 50 miles each way and sit in traffic on an average of 3 hours each day. I'd give an arm to go back to my 27-mile commute! My advice? Good radio stations, an iPod, and/or books on CD.

Northridge to Van Nuys: 6 miles. Still takes me 30 minutes for some reason at 8 AM...

out of curiosity, why don't you rent a place close to your newest job?

I haven't changed jobs...yet. My 50-mile commute is what would have been for a year if I hadn't rented a place 5 miles from work, rather than driving from home everyday. I stopped renting when the year-long lease was up and decided to grin and bear the commute while awaiting the transition into another job, which should be any day now!

I do West Adams to the Brentwood at rush hour, which is about 9 miles. It is about 50 minutes by bicycle.
