Hey everyone - this is really helpful, thank you!

As I'm moving to LA from another country, the ideas about less tourist-y things to do are definitely appreciated. I'm sure in time I'll hit all the hotspots but knowing a few good restaurants n some historic sites is going to give me some fun stuff to do while my stuff is being shipped.

On the apartments rents, I think I may have way underestimated costs. Is $1400 a month just not feasible? Where could we live which is safe for that type of money?
It may turn out that walking to work is just a dream if everything is $2000 or $3000+ a month

$1400/mo for a 1bd apartment is more than enough in most of LA, including the nicer parts.

However, this thread was strictly for the Downtown LA portion. There are studios available in that range, but they will be on the small side and your options will be limited in Downtown in that price range.

For instance, this building is right in the center of downtown...pretty easy walk to the financial district or any of the bars/clubs restaurants, and right next to the redline...literally 50 ft from the buildings entrance. A lot of shady people in the area though.
