I'm surprised to see it that high. To put it into perspective, that's only ~800 shy of the total number of US military killed in Iraq since 2003. And to think it used to be much worse....

Both the murder statistic and traffic fatalities seemed to tank with the economy in 2007... interesting..

Numbers of crimes, even violent crime, is comparable to South LA. What skews it toward the safer side is that the area is very high density, so your chances of being a victim are lower.
