HA! There is lot's of money in LA, and lot's of debt, and lot's of leasing going on. My daughter moved there with her beat up 10 yr old Civic with the side mirrors held on with duct tape and a ding or scratch in every panel and says it's the worst looking car in LA. We call it the Millennium Falcon because it looks like crap but runs really well.

As mentioned above - there is a lot of money here, and people drive a lot. I drive upwards of 25k miles a year, so nice, comfortable, reliable cars are a must.

In addition to that, LA seems to have a lot of people trying to 'keep up' with the wealthy, so driving a $50k car and living in small 1 bedroom is not uncommon.

Not all of it is superficial pretense. Los Angeles's lucrative media, entertainment and yes, drug trade, affords a lots of legitimately well off folks there the pleasure of owning upscale automobiles too.

Higher wages for the cost of living means that if you can afford just 100 more per month, you can get just a little better of vehicle. That works it self up the ladder of income so people who value car luxury can work in a little more than if you are making less in a lower cost area.

cars are important status symbols in LA; in many places, how you are treated and how much respect you get depends on how expensive your car is

I drive a "chick magnet". When I drive down the street, women call "Charles, Charles, Can I ride with you?" They want me to drive them near their friends so they can be seen in the chick magnet. Sometimes, when I am driving down the street, they throw their underwear at me.

The Magnet: 1998 white F-150 work truck, roll up windows, vinyl floor, bench seats, manual transmission.
