One of the things I miss about not living in LA anymore is the lack of palm trees. I know their charm is entirely ornamental -- they're not native to the region and provide zero shade -- but I love them anyway. As with the OP, they are symbolic of LA to me.

Well, there would certainly be more shade! That is, assuming they are replaced by another type of tree.

I just don't think much about palm trees when I think of Los Angeles. Chapparal (on the hillside - those scrubby looking trees that are a mixture of brown and green) are the plant that I associate with Los Angeles.

She was totally serious, and I thought it was funny.
