One of the things I miss about not living in LA anymore is the lack of palm trees. I know their charm is entirely ornamental -- they're not native to the region and provide zero shade -- but I love them anyway. As with the OP, they are symbolic of LA to me.

There a couple of small ones here in Dallas and they're sad, tired things. Houston, on the other hand, has quite a few though they tend to be of the shorter variety, not the tall, elegant ones you see in LA that seem so iconic of the image of paradise.

Well, there would certainly be more shade! That is, assuming they are replaced by another type of tree.

Agreed. I am not a fan of palm trees.

I just don't think much about palm trees when I think of Los Angeles. Chapparal (on the hillside - those scrubby looking trees that are a mixture of brown and green) are the plant that I associate with Los Angeles.

Now that you mentioned it, Baghdad looks a little like Beverly Hills

One of the most important criteria my wife had when we were shopping for a house was that there should be no palm trees nearby.

She was totally serious, and I thought it was funny.

We both grew up in Los Angeles proper (area code 213)--so we sort of have an understanding how palm trees can make streets look dumpy and ghetto.
