Lets be real here for a second - proponents of this train don't care about people with the above mentioned fears - they care about waging war on automobile travel. If you could tell me that this thing would be funded with private capital and ticket sales, I wouldn't care either way (still probably wouldn't take it), but that simply isnt the case. Private industry hasn't built this thing because it wont be profitable (unless, of course, the state of CA outlaws cars).
I don't disagree.

Not sure if the proponents of the HSR are trying to "wage a war on automobile travel" as 1200 RT mentioned. They're trying to alleviate traffic congestion, so that people would actually leave their cars and take the HSR, if it goes into effect. Also, I believe the flight time between LA and SF is less than an hour but if you factor in the time required to get to and from the airport how much time does it actually take?

Other than holiday weekends, the congestion BETWEEN SF and LA is unremarkable. Whereas, WITHIN each metro the congestion is grinding and ongoing. THEREFORE ... spend money on INTRAURBAN transit, not INTERURBAN transit.

Also agreed. I would be much more likely (still a slim chance, thought) to take an urban type train rather than between two major destinations.

L.A. is well into it's subway expansion, and BART...seems to take generations.

Yeah, but isn't Amtrak losing money hand over fist and sponging off the government for big ole subsidies. Oh yeah, that's right, CA HSR will be doing the exact same thing.

Hey, I was looking at personal benefits, not societal.

Amtrak is not given fair funding and is forced to use obsolete trains , Amtrak has only gotten 40 Billion in funding from the feds since its creation back in the 70s , Highways and Airports have gotten over 2 Trillion in Funding... If Amtrak were to be given that amount it would be operating in the green....
