My husband and I are spending four days in LA in April. We are targeting two days of tourist activities (Hollywood, etc) in the city and hopefully two days of beach R&R. We were recomended either Laguna Beach area or to head up to San Diego. Any suggestions on what NOT to miss in LA and where to check out the beach for the last two days? Thanks in advance! We're excited!

That's a long drive to Laguna Beach or San Diego. Check out closer beaches such as Venice Beach and nearby Santa Monica Pier. Venice Beach, California - VeniceBeach.com Home - Santa Monica Pier

Put this in the LA forum for better response!

Don't count on having perfect beach weather in April. While it doesn't normally rain much in April, it can be cool and overcast. Sometimes Southern California gets better beach days in December & January than April. In Winter, the weather tends to be either raining and chilly, or gloriously sunny with warm days and chilly nights. In Spring, it tends to be dry, but with somewhat more overcast days than Winter, with daytime highs only a few degrees warmer than in Winter.

I also agree that Laguna Beach and San Diego might be a bit of a drive. Places like Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Manhattan Beach, etc. would be closer, but the temperatures the same or a notch cooler.

Examples:

Average high in Laguna Beach in January: 65. In April: 69.

Average high in San Diego in January: 65. In April: 68.

So,while it's possible you'll get great beach weather in April, I would make alternate plans just in case it doesn't work out. I remember a time I was at Venice Beach (near Los Angeles) in April and t was overcast all day and it barely hit 60.

In short, Winter weather in SoCal beaches tends to be either crappy or glorious. In Spring, it's usually not super crappy, but it can be kinda meh.

I suggest visiting the Miracle Mile, the La Brea Tar Pits, Santa Monica Pier and the 3rd Street Promenade.
