Depends on the area. At some point, I've belonged to one chain gym or another (LA Fitness, Gold's, 24-Hours) - except Spectrum - and in the end...home gym (treadmill, pilates, yoga) works best for me.

When possible - Golds.

Avoid at all costs - Ballys.

Kinda depends on where you live. Where do you live? In one of your four posts you mentioned that you live in a very safe area of L.A. and didnt think to highly of the valley, so I assume you are in L.A. somwehere. Let us know so I could probably give you an idea of the gyms around you that are good.

Ive been a member of many gyms but by far my favorite is my home garage/gym.

Of the gyms I have been a member of or worked out at, my favorite is without a doubt Equinox in Woodland Hills. I REALLY like Crossfit gyms but I refuse to pay someone to train me or have access to things I already have/own/know.

I also really liked Magic Johnson's 24 HR Fitness in Sherman Oaks Galleria. When I was living in my Sherman Oaks condo I used to go there all the time. Now that Im renting out that place and living in my house in Woodland Hills, I dont go anymore. Other 24 HR fitness locations are NOT good. Also, as another posted stated, dont even bother with Ballys as they are horrible.

Hi. Im new here (posting, been reading the forum for a time now). Yes, i live in Los Angeles (Hollywood Hills). I go to Equinox on Sunset Blvd and the one in Beverly Hills. I have the all access pass so i can go to all of them around the country but i mainly use those two. The one in Westwood is very nice but im kinda far and the traffic is insane. I love Equinox, a lot of people say that is way too expensive but hey, you pay for what you get. Pay 30 dollars and go exercise at a ghetto gym, pay more than 100 dollars and you'll find yourself working out in a nice environment.
I never been at the one in Woodland Hills, do they have a pool ? what sucks about Sunset Plaza and the one in Beverly Hills is that they dont have a pool.
