Greetings,

I'm 28 years old, and I recently took a job in Santa Monica. I have been staying in temp housing in Santa Monica for the past month, but really need to find a place.

I was hoping to be able to bike to work. So I was initially concentrating my search to Santa Monica, since I don't really know the surrounding areas. I am finding that most of the places here, regardless of price (well, regardless of price within my price range) are pretty terrible.

Can you recommend some nice areas to live in? I was so far told Venice, Marina Del Ray, Brentwood, and Culver City ... but then everyone is quick to tell me to only live between certain streets in certain cities. This quickly led to confusion.

Any help is appreciated. My price range is between 1500 and 2000. I need a spacious 1 bedroom for myself, my girlfriend, and my small dog.

how far are you willing to bike? besides the area around the mar vista gardens housing projects, there really aren't any terrible neighborhoods you should absolutely avoid. if i were you, i'd drive around the different areas that have been recommended to you and see which you like best. fwiw, my favorite neighborhood in that area is the ocean park neighborhood around main street. i lived there with my wife when we were just married and walked to the bars, restaurants and beach regularly. it's expensive, but your budget would get you a 1br place of decent size.

I live near Westwood and love it. Its about a 2 mile bike ride to Santa Monica, and 4 miles to the beach from my place. Check out Rancho Park and Mar Vista too.

Brentwood to Santa Monica on bike, really? That's too far, isn't it? Focus on the Santa Monica area, possibly Venice...but any further and that's a lot of biking...

For a 1 bedroom, that range should be perfectly fine in SM, if you don't mind going up to the higher part of your range.

Have you seen different?

Mom and Pop's all day long in Santa Monica. 1950s-1970s construction.

Avoid the large commerically owned ventures in the downtown area and you can have a unit at that price. Pick your street anywhere up the #'s from 7th to 20th. Look for something North of Broadway or Colorado. Closer to Wilshire you get, the more expensive the rents, depending on the building.... Drive the streets. Don't both looking online.
