how far are you willing to bike? besides the area around the mar vista gardens housing projects, there really aren't any terrible neighborhoods you should absolutely avoid. if i were you, i'd drive around the different areas that have been recommended to you and see which you like best. fwiw, my favorite neighborhood in that area is the ocean park neighborhood around main street. i lived there with my wife when we were just married and walked to the bars, restaurants and beach regularly. it's expensive, but your budget would get you a 1br place of decent size.

I live near Westwood and love it. Its about a 2 mile bike ride to Santa Monica, and 4 miles to the beach from my place. Check out Rancho Park and Mar Vista too.

Brentwood to Santa Monica on bike, really? That's too far, isn't it? Focus on the Santa Monica area, possibly Venice...but any further and that's a lot of biking...
