Husband and I are considering buying a home in San Pedro. Can any locals tell me if the Vista Del Oro neighborhood is too sketchy to consider?

We have three kids, 14,7 and 3 and are looking for something relatively safe. As awful as "relatively" sounds - I know that even behind the gates in RPV bad things can happen. My friend was carjacked in the poshest part of Pacific Palisades.

I don't mind (in fact prefer) diversity, and I know that anywhere you live it is dumb to be dumb about where you put yourself at certain hours of the night.

We currently live in Reseda after living in Playa Del Rey for eight years. The West SFV offers a lot of family friendly opportunities, but my heart (just not my budget) is still back by the beach.

I've had more crime happen too and around me in the nicer neighborhoods of LA - but the stats I've seen on this neighborhood are a bit alarming. I know the schools aren't perfect, but charters and magnets are usually where we end up anyway.

Help, please?

From what I've heard that area isn't all that good.
