Using the article "the" implies something in addition to the simple numeric value, eg, freeway. The rest of the country is simply wrong.

I don't think I ever used the word "highway" until I left So Cal.

Out here in flyover country, they are all "highways", or "I's".

Carl's Jr, also an LA institution. If I remember from my Carl's Jr. training video way back when, the first store was a food stand in South Central.

In and Out and Carl's are my two favorite fast food places, I always get one or the other when I drive to the Bay Area through the Grapevine on the 5.
