Hello everyone,
I'm just curious what places do i have to definately avoid in Los Angeles being a young man, in fancy clothes and with a very expensive camera? i know it sounds dumb but i just dont want to get robbed or killed

Also can u give me some information about the places like Anaheim and Westlake Village, because i have couple of gigs out there,

By the way im staying in the hotel near Public Library in downtown so thats why im asking,

Please be honest and thank you in advance!

Bigusa517, I am not sure if you are coming to Los Angeles on vacation or for work or both. However I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I am 48 years old.

The easiest answer I can give you is, if you stay on the westside, you should be okay. The westside includes cities and areas like West Hollywood, Century City, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Santa Monica, Culver City, Pacific Palisades, Venice, Marina Del Rey, Play Del Rey. Yet if you go to any of these places at night, just stay alert (especially in Venice) and you should be okay.

Now with that being said, places I would definitely avoid in and around Los Angeles at night would be East downtown Los Angeles, East Los Angeles, Compton, Watts, Lynwood, Willowbrook, South Gate, Lennox . . . as all of these places have high crime and gang problems. Personally, I avoid these cities and areas day and night, but if I have to go to any of them, I always go in the daytime and I am always gone before sundown.

Now with that being said, keep in mind that bad things can happen “anywhere” . . . even in the most affluent and upscale cities and communities. Yet based on your posting, I would deem the westside as the more safer areas in and around Los Angeles (IMHO). Yet just use good judgment and take the usual safety precautions, and you should be relatively safe here and have a great time.

I can not give you any information about Anaheim and Westlake Village, because though I know of both places, however I do not frequent them enough to provide any help advice.

Good luck.

Wilson

P.S. I just saw this part of your posting when you said "By the way im staying in the hotel near Public Library in downtown so thats why im asking." IMHO, I think that area would be okay and safe day and night, yet just stay alert . . . yet I would advise you to tone it down at night, by not looking affluent or touristy and try to dress as casual as you can and avoid displaying expensive articles (smart phones, laptop computers, jewelry, cameras, etc.).

Too many people have this image of Los Angeles from the late 1980s and early 1990s (where crime was at its worst).

LA right now has seen its crime (especially violent crime) drop to its lowest levels since the 1950s.

It's still a big city, and like any big city you do need to take the regular precautions as you would anywhere else.

Downtown has some places that look gritty (with its share of homeless people), but it's still relatively safe and unlikely anything will happen to you other than panhandlers asking you for spare change. And where you'll be staying (by The Standard Hotel) is perfectly fine.

Westlake Village and Anaheim are suburban and pretty benign. You won't get robbed and killed, although given the distance you have to travel from downtown, you may end up becoming so aggravated that you want to kill somebody for having to fight through all that traffic!!

The only parts of the LA region that you may not want to go into are places of South LA (essentially where the 110 and 105 freeways intersect) - but that is nowhere near where you'll be.

Thank you guys, as for the image from 80's and 90's, so yes i have this image because i have never been to Los Angeles, and of course this image might sounds a bit wild for you but anyways i have to take my precautions and i guess you guys would have the same image of gangs and violence all around if u would decide to take a trip to Harlem, NYC (the place i live right now), so i hope LA's crime rate is really lowered as you said and i wont feel myself more unsafe than i feel in NYC

So East LA, Compton, Watts, Lynwood, Willowbrook, South Gate, and Lennox are Los Angeles's "new Sundown Towns"?

I don't think Los Angeles has a neighborhood equivalent to Harlem. Frankly, any neighborhood we drove or walked through, having spent two summers there, seemed a great improvement over Harlem. Granted we did avoid Compton, East L.A. and Watts at night time.
Also, as in Harlem, a little common sense goes a long way.
