I was surprised at the "low" cost of rent in Long Beach in comparison to other areas of LA county and was wondering if that was due to certain apartments being in unsafe areas. I'm from out-of-state and don't know much about the area but am considering transferring to Cal State Long Beach next year.

Anything around CSULB will be nice. Everything east of Redondo is generally nice. The CSULB students tend to live in Belmont Shore, around the area centered by the Atherton/Clark intersection, downtown, or the edge of Belmont Heigts (4th street/retro row area).
The areas to avoid are on the west side of town. There are some nice areas on the west side but not many students live there.

Sure. The east side of LB is very nice. Very suburban if that is what you are looking for.

I'd add its a very close drive to entertainment in Downtown LB, Belmont Shores, and Seal Beach. 10-15 minutes max to each location. Also not far from Huntington Beach, and even Newport...a largely enjoyable drive down PCH.

I think this is not accurate. Downtown is not a place to stay away from if you like urban downtown living. Name one area in the eastern part of the city that someone should "stay away from".

Downtown is fine. It's not the typical "downtown" you're thinking of. Lots of nice hi-rise apartments if you will. As a Long Beach resident, I would say that it's best to stay below 4th st, AND/OR east of Redondo Ave. The eastern side of LB in general is where you want to be. LB has a large population and very diverse communities. You literally have "everything" in LB! All the while being a beach community. I have friends that moved here from New Haven, Connecticut. They absolutely love the "LBC!"

Yeah, I agree with some of the other posters, generally east and south are the better places to be.
North LB pretty much sucks, which is sad, cause I was raised in that part, but oh well.
Staying near CSULB, you can't go wrong.
